ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mikhail Baryshnikov was born in Riga, Latvia in 1948 to Russian parents. He received his early training at the Riga Choreographic School and was then accepted by the Vaganova School in Leningrad where he studied with renowned teacher Alexander Pushkin. At 18, he entered the Kirov Ballet as a soloist and remained with the company from 1968 to 1974, when he left Russia. He danced with modern and classical companies around the world until joining New York City Ballet as a principal dancer in 1979. In 1980 he became the artistic director of American Ballet Theater, a post he held until 1990. From 1990 to 2002, Mr. Baryshnikov was director and dancer with The White Oak Dance Project, which he co-founded with choreographer Mark Morris. He has starred in several films, and has worked in television and on Broadway. Mr. Baryshnikov has received numerous awards and honorary degrees, most recently the 2000 Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of the Arts, the Commonwealth Award, the Jerome Robbins' Award and Yale University's highest honor -- the Chubb Fellowship. He began photographing in the early 80's and was published in Aperture magazine in Spring 2003. His present endeavor, the Baryshnikov Arts Center, located at 450 West 37th Street in New York City, is a laboratory for new work and a creative haven for emerging artists.
